The study of »in Christ« language in New Testament scholarship has received widespread attention in recent years. Nevertheless, despite all the perspectives from which scholars have treated this topic, one aspect of »in Christ« language has received only scant attention: its ritual or sacramental aspect. While theological, epistemological, and linguistic factors have contributed to the downplaying of rituals like baptism and the Lord's Supper in the New Testament, Yu Chen develops the framework of a ritual transformation model from ritual theories to place the study of ritual in its rightful place. Accordingly, the author focuses on the historical and social implications of the ritual performance of baptism and the Lord's Supper, which are used to explain the mechanisms of union with Christ. Finally, he argues that rituals provide participants with access to the transformative experience of encountering the risen Messiah.

L'apôtre Paul a la réputation d'être assez catégorique. Il prêcherait une morale rigide, utilisant de nombreux verbes à l'impératif, où les commandements occuperaient une place importante. On dit parfois de lui que, lorsqu'il s'est converti, cela a fait un chrétien de plus mais pas un pharisien de moins. On peut lire, par exemple, dans la 1ère épître aux Corinthiens : « La circoncision n'est rien et l'incirconcision n'est rien : le tout, c'est l'observance des commandements » (1 Corinthiens 7,19). Observance des commandements de Dieu, respect des ordres donnés par l'Apôtre, appels à l'obéissance... Est-ce cela que Paul préconise ? Le professeur Michel Quesnel reprend l'ensemble des lettres dont Paul est certainement l'auteur, dans l'ordre chronologique de leur écriture, et ouvre à nouveau le dossier. Paul est l'auteur du Nouveau Testament qui utilise le plus le vocabulaire de la liberté. Il invite le chrétien à faire d'abord appel à sa conscience et à respecter la conscience de l'autre. Dans ses derniers écrits, la notion de commandement disparaît, au point que « Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même » n'est même pas considéré comme un commandement. Le critère ultime de l'agir moral est pour Paul l'amour-charité, un amour-charité inventif qui doit aider l'autre à grandir et à se construire. Au fil des siècles, les Églises ont produit du droit et des lois. Paul les interroge : n'ont-elles pas multiplié les commandements à l'excès ?

"Christopher G. Foster identifies Jewish mystical elements in the Dead Sea Scrolls and compares them with analogous features in the Corinthian correspondence to illuminate through differences and similarities how Paul advocates a mystical and communal participation in the Spirit. After defining early Jewish mysticism and introducing the method of heuristic comparison, Part I identifies and investigates mystical elements in Dead Sea Scrolls. Part II compares these findings with corresponding aspects in 1 and 2 Corinthians to demonstrate the largely corporate tenor of participation and transformation in and by the spirit for Paul."
